Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club Guide

The Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club is one of the largest greyhound racing clubs in New Zealand and is also used for harness racing. The venue is located at the Addington Raceway and Events centre on Jack Hinton Drive in Christchurch in New Zealand. The raceway can be reached from Wrights road or Twiggers street using Lincoln Road. Whiteleigh avenue can also be used to reach Hinton drive and the club. Blenheim Road and Birmingham drive are other roads in the proximity of the raceway. The pavilion stand is located at the northern end of race track, and the kennels, and offices are located next to this stand.

About the Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club 

The greyhound track is located on the inside of the harness racing track. The races are held on the track usually over four different distances 295 m, 520 m, 645 m and 732 m. The timing for each race is recorded, and the best timings for each distance, the track records are published on the website. The track for greyhound racing is made from a well baked sand surface, which is designed for safe racing. Access to the raceway is free for all on race days. There is a good provision for vehicle parking for the visitors.

The racing calendar for the year is published on the website, and races are usually held on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, though some races are scheduled for Monday also. The races will usually begin at 12 o clock in the afternoon and usually twelve races will be scheduled. In each race there are eight greyhounds participating. The points are allocated according to the position of the greyhound in the race, with the greyhound finishing first getting 10 points, while the greyhound finishing last will get one point. The kennels at the raceway will open 60 to 120 minutes before the start of the races.

For some high profile races like feature races, trials may be held or other criteria is used. In other cases, the points system is used to decide the greyhounds who will take part in the race with the top 8 greyhounds participating. For a greyhound who has not participated in any race in the past, he will be allocated 3 points for each race, till he completes 4 races. The same rules are applicable for greyhounds which are imported from Australia and other countries. The points system is mainly used to separate greyhounds of the same grade.

The Big Events of Note

One of the most high profile featured race at the Addington Raceway is the New Zealand Oaks race which features female greyhounds. The prize money for this high profile race in April 2019 was $46,000.

A hospitality package had been organized which is priced at $75  for this event. Entry to the raceway is free, with free parking and racebooks. Well dressed visitors could win hair and beauty gift vouchers. The package includes seating at level 3 at the members stand for getting a good view of the racing. When featured races are held, track side dining is usually offered at the raceway. This ensures that visitors can access the members stand, where they get a good view of the racecourse. The Addington Raceway has a large number of sponsors who are listed on the website. Sponsoring the greyhound races is a very effective way of advertising their businesses. Many of the sponsors are local businesses, and they have greyhound races named after them. These races are covered in the local and national media.Some major sponsors like Christchurch Casino have their signboard installed at the raceway.

The racing club is managed by the chairperson, deputy chairperson, manager, management board. They are assisted by a team which include vets, lure driver, judge, kennel, identification, parade stewards, commentator, clerk, starters and kennel security staff.
