About the Racing Tauranga Venue

It is one of the largest racing clubs in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand and hosts some of the most popular race meetings, which are well attended. Racing began in the Tauranga region more than 150 years ago, and horse racing was mentioned in the newspapers published in 1872.

In 1874, the Government handed over the Tauranga Racecourse to the horse owners and horse race fans for development. Since then it has become a popular venue for horse races. The racecourse is well known for its innovative practices like weight for age racing for horses and accumulator jackpot , which was then restricted by the government. The club has been fighting for women’s rights, with a race for women riders. Women jockeys have won the right to compete against men. The Japan New Zealand International trophy is the most high profile and rewarding race at the race course. It is run over 1600 m and has a prize money of $100,000.
