The Royal Oak Bowls Club is one of the leading bowling clubs in Auckland formed by the merger of Hillsboro bowling club and the Onehunga bowling club. The Hillsboro bowling club was formed in 1924 and was one of leading clubs, winning a large number of local championship. However in the last decade it faced the problem of declines in membership and reduction in the participation by members.

About The Royal Oak Bowls Club Onehunga
The Onehunga bowling club was formed in 1901 by prominent businessmen in Auckland and its members had represented the country in world and other championship. Though Onehunga and Hillsboro were rival bowling clubs, both faced the same problem, and decided to merge on 1st September 2017 and are located at 146, Selwyn Street, Onehunga.
The club welcomes all members, those who bowl like a pro as well as social members who would like to meet others. It has various types of memberships, for example full membership will cost $150, limited members will only have to pay $75. As an incentive for joining, members have to pay only $60 for their first years membership, so that they can check the facilities which are available. Student members also have to pay less, only $60. Social members of the club, who will not play bowls frequently will only pay $30. For applying for membership, the form has to be filled.
Every year, usually in April, the Royal Oak Bowls Easter triples is held with a prize money of $20,000. It consists of a main event, plate event and flight. Through the year a number of bowling competitions are held for both men and women.These include the Graded Singles, Graded Pairs, Graded Triples, Graded Fours, Open Singles, Open Pairs, Open Triples, Open Fours.
Additionally there are Mixed events with teams having men and women, events for juniors, intermediate, first year and veterans in the men.s and women’s category. The championship schedule is published on their website so check it for the latest current information.

For those who are interesting in bowling to socialize, the club has a comprehensive social bowls program. This includes Twilight bowls, on Wednesday evening, specifically for those who are new to bowling. Each team will have two members, and food will be provided, entry is just $15 per person.
The Social bowls3five league is for six weeks starting November every year. Each team has three members and the fee for each team is $120. Gourmet burger and bowls is held on Friday evenings, and is suitable for corporate and social groups. This is priced at $20 per person.
Corporate or casual bowls programs can also be arranged since the club has a licensed bar and can arrange for catering. the cost of the program is $15 per person, with the bowls supplied.The bowls coach will organize the event if required and the charges are $50 for two hours.
Functions and Event Hosting
Since the club is close to the city centre and has parking facilities, catering, and beverages, it can be hired for corporate and personal functions. The main hall can seat up to 230 people for buffet or conferences, and 300 people for cocktails. The club also has a sports lounge, with a seating capacity of 70 people. The main hall and sports lounge can be combined if required.
