Auckland Racing Club is one of the most reputed racing clubs in New Zealand and in Oceania. The Ellerslie racecourse at the club hosts races featuring the best thoroughbred horses in the country.

The Ellerslie track is a 1876m right handed track with a 382m length straight located just a 20 minute drive south from Auckland CBD. The racing club was founded on January 9, 1874 by the merger of the Auckland Jockey Club and the Auckland Turf Club.

The Jockey club had started horse racing at the Epsom Racecourse at Epsom Downs, three miles from the city on January 5, 1842. The Auckland Town Plate and Valapraiso Stakes Handicaps were some of the first races and they were held annually. The turf club held only a few races before it was merged.

The first races of the club were held on May 25, 26, 1874 since May 25 was the birthday of Queen Victoria at Ellerslie. Horse racing had already started at Ellerslie since 1857. Events of Note at Ellerslie Racecourse

A large number of feature and other horse races are held at the racecourse. The NZB Karaka Millions over a distance of 1200 meters and Karaka Million 3YO classic over a distance of 1600 meters held on January 26 are the races with the maximum amount of prize money, as each of races have one million dollars at stake. The Barfoot & Thomson Auckland Cup with $500,000 prize money over a distance of 3200 m on March 9, is another one of the top races that is on the event calendar.

There are a large number of features races with prize money of $50,000 each, and there are some feature races with more prize money ranging from $70,000 to $200,00 each. Most of these races are run over a distance of up to 3000 m. Irvines Great Northern Steeplechase is run over a distance of 6400 m and has a prize money of $125,000 on September 9, 2019. On the same day, the Schweppes Great Northern Hurdles, a hurdles race for horses is held over a distance of 4190 meters, with a prize money of $125,000. There are other hurdles and steeplechases also. Many races are held all year round including Boxing Day and New Years day.

Membership Options

The club has a wide range of membership options based on the profile, age and other details of the member. The standard membership fee of the club is $220 per year For younger members of the club of age between 18 to 35, the membership fee is lower at $110 per year. Senior members above the age of 65 who have been members of the club for more than 20 years are eligible for a discounted fee of $145.
